Power Infrastructure

Power delivery, grid capacity, and electrical infrastructure for AI datacenters.

Stack position

Where Power Infrastructure sits in the AI stack

  1. L0 · Energy

Generation and fuel feeding the grid that AI datacenters draw on: gas, nuclear, renewables, storage.

  2. L1 · Power Infrastructure

Power delivery, grid capacity, and electrical infrastructure for AI datacenters.

  3. L2 · Semiconductor Materials

Silicon wafers, photoresist, specialty gases, and process chemicals — few suppliers per node.

  4. L3 · Semiconductor Equipment

Lithography, etch, deposition, inspection, and advanced packaging tools.

Why this layer matters

Between the grid and a GPU there is a whole chain: transmission, transformers, switchgear, UPS, PDU, and rack-level distribution. Each step has to be sized for the rack, and racks are moving from tens of kilowatts toward 100kW+ and megawatt scale.

What is the bottleneck?

Transformer and switchgear lead times are measured in quarters to years. A datacenter with accelerators on site and no energisation path is not compute.

A structural observation about supplier concentration and lead times — not a view on any security.

The other side

Long lead times are not the same as a lasting shortage. Equipment makers can add capacity, and lead times shorten as it arrives; electrical equipment has had cycles in which orders surge and then fall back. Data centers can also work around part of the grid and distribution constraint with on-site generation, storage or more flexible load, and efficiency gains in chips and racks slow the growth in power per site.

What could invalidate this picture?

The constraint eases if transformer and switchgear lead times shorten clearly, or if on-site generation and storage let data centers stop waiting on the grid. It tightens if rack power keeps climbing toward megawatt scale while interconnection queues and equipment lead times do not shorten.

Coverage boundary

Coverage boundary: US-listed tickers or ADRs only (same rule as TSM / ASML). Important suppliers without a US listing are omitted even when they matter to the stack. That is a coverage rule, not a quality ranking.

No hand-listed notable omissions for this layer yet. The US-list / ADR rule still applies.

Checked 2026-10-09. Not exhaustive.

Same track

Descriptive positioning only. The positioning label says whether a company's business is exposed to a layer, never whether to buy it. Layers with no exposure are not recommendations to add any.
